10 Travel Photography and Travel Writing Markets that Pay
Posted on 18 July 2010 by Jeff
Reality can be difficult for a travel writer/photographer. The bills must be paid and today’s current market isn’t the easiest to navigate. Thankfully these 10 outlets, which build on PhotoJBartlett’s Where to Submit, Sell, and Market Travel Photography list, will not only publish travel photography and travel writing, but they’ll pay for it, too. As publishing budgets shrink, the demand for combined writing and photography work has never been higher. Whether focusing on travel writing or photography, it would likely benefit you to include both services in potential queries.
The Beginning – Markets to help new photographers/writers break in:
Contests – While contests offer nothing in terms of guaranteed income, they provide a great source of exposure and the possibility of prizes and cash. Make sure to read the entry requirements in detail and follow all instructions. You’d be surprised at how many people are disqualified for overlooking simple suggestions like file naming and image theme.
Matador Network – The Matador Network features 11 content-specific blogs and it publishes more than 12 articles every day. While the pay isn’t too high, it is an excellent starting point in terms of exposure (721 890 Monthly Visitors) and flexibility (choose from assigned articles on the Bounty Board or pitch your own idea). Matador also provides a permanent link to your own site, which will increase expose your work.
The Building Process – Markets to help build a stronger portfolio:
